As one of the events of the Second Asia-Pacific Forestry Week, the Second Forestry College Deans Meeting in the Asia-Pacific Region was convened at 11 November. Sponsored by APFNet, with Beijing Forestry Beijing Forestry University, FAO, University of British Columbia, University of Melbourne, Universities Putra Malaysia, and TNC as co-sponsors, the meeting brought about 70 participants from 17 Asia-Pacific universities, 5 international organizations crossing the Asia-Pacific region.

Report of APFNet's Workshop on Forest Resources Management  October 2011

The workshop provided a regional overview of sustainable forest management; highlighted efforts to improve forest governance and law enforcement; identified key issues related to sustainable forest management; and outlined concrete steps to improve current conditions. The venue also served as an effective forum for decision-makers and other experts to share experiences, practices, knowledge and lessons.

In the past few decades, many economies in the Asia-Pacific region with supportive legislation in place, have been implementing certification schemes, strengthening institutional capacity and developing monitoring systems to track progress as they move toward sustainable forest management. However, weak capacity and insufficient resources still pose serious constraints to achieving goals. Discussions during the workshop generated innovative ideas on how to address a number of forest management issues in the region, including better ways to balance development with protection - the theme of the first APEC ministerial meeting on forestry which took place in Beijing in September 2011.

In September 2011, China hosted the First APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry in Beijing, China to advance region-wide cooperation in the sector. This document was produced as a reference paper for the ministerial discussions. It includes an overview of forest resources and products, progress made so far towards sustainable forest management, and priorities and outlook for the future for the APEC region.

First APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry  September 2011

The first APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry was held by China from 6-7 September 2011 in Beijing, this meeting is intended to assess existing efforts and explore further opportunities to enhance work on meeting the aspirational forest cover goal, and also aims to scale- up commitments to promote sustainable forest management and rehabilitation and address forest-related issues to contribute to the green growth agenda of APEC. Under the theme of Enhanced Regional Cooperation for Green Growth and Sustainable Forestry Development, this proceeding includes the new opportunities and challenges facing forestry in Aisa and the Pacific, wise use of forest resources to improve livelihoods and promote sustainable development, strengthening forest governance and management to promote multiple functions of forests for green growth, and enhancing practical cooperation to achieve inclusive growth for the forest sector in the region.
